Nagaland Police bbserves Police Commemoration Day at PHQ Kohima

KOHIMA, October 21, 2026: Nagaland Police observed Police Commemoration Day at the Police Headquarters (PHQ), Kohima, on Wednesday to honour police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty and pay tribute to their courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice in safeguarding the nation.

Addressing the gathering, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Renchamo P. Kikon, IPS, described the occasion as one of profound solemnity and pride, dedicated to remembering police personnel who placed the safety of society and the integrity of the nation above their own lives.

Recalling the origins of Police Commemoration Day, Kikon referred to the October 1959 incident in Ladakh, when a patrol party of Indian police personnel was ambushed by heavily armed Chinese troops amid heightened border tensions between India and China. Ten personnel were killed in the encounter, while seven others were injured and taken prisoner. Their sacrifice became the foundation of the annual observance of Police Commemoration Day across the country.

Kikon paid tribute to the fallen personnel and acknowledged their valour and commitment to the nation. He also expressed solidarity with the families of the martyrs, assuring them that the Nagaland Police fraternity stood with them and would continue to support them. He said the sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten.

He said the observances would continue until October 31, culminating in Rashtriya Ekta Divas, or National Unity Day, which marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and reaffirms the importance of national unity and integrity.

In this connection, Kikon highlighted Nagaland Police’s participation in the National Motorcycle Expedition 2026. A nine-member contingent of Nagaland Police was flagged off on October 7 for a 2,845-kilometre journey across seven states to promote unity, diversity and respect for the sacrifices of police personnel. The team is scheduled to join other contingents in Gujarat on October 31 for the National Unity Day celebrations.

Emphasising the challenges faced by police personnel in discharging their duties, Kikon said the force remained committed to fulfilling its responsibilities regardless of circumstances or location. He urged serving personnel to draw inspiration from the cenotaph and the legacy of their fallen colleagues, stressing that the truest tribute to the martyrs was to uphold the ideals for which they had sacrificed their lives.

He called upon police personnel to remain committed to crime prevention, the maintenance of public peace and order, and service to the people with integrity and compassion. He also emphasised that the police uniform must continue to symbolise public trust, safety and sacrifice.

During the observance, the Roll of Honour of 154 Indian police personnel who attained martyrdom between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026, was read out. A wreath-laying ceremony was also held in tribute to the fallen personnel. (DPRO, Kohima)
