LOK SABHA SPEAKER OM BIRLA TO INAUGURATE 22nd CPA CONFERENCE AT KOHIMA
KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 9 (DIPR):
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will inaugurate the 22nd Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III at Kohima, Nagaland, on November 10, 2025.
The inaugural programme will be graced by Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, and Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly and Chairman, CPA India Region Zone-III, Sharingain Longkumer.
The two-day Conference, to be held from November 10–11, 2025, will bring together Presiding Officers, MPs, and MLAs from Zone-III of the CPA India Region, comprising eight Northeastern States. The theme of the Conference is “Policy, Progress & People: Legislatures as Catalysts of Change.”
The sub-themes include:
- Role of Legislatures in Achieving Viksit Bharat
- Climate Change – In the Light of Recent Cloudbursts and Landslides in Parts of the Northeast Region
The Closing Ceremony will be addressed by Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. The vote of thanks will be proposed by Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and Vice Chairman, CPA India Region Zone-III, and S. Toiho Yeptho, Deputy Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
To commemorate the event, a Tree Plantation Drive will also be organized during the Conference.
The CPA India Region Zone-III has played an important role in fostering regional cooperation, promoting parliamentary best practices, and addressing issues specific to the Northeast such as infrastructure development and the Act East Policy. Notable achievements include the integration of the Northeast Region in the India–ASEAN Vision for Trade and Cooperation, and calls for faster implementation of infrastructure projects, enhancement of trading outposts, and promotion of cultural exchanges.
The Zone also emphasizes strengthening parliamentary processes through digital innovation and greater public participation, as seen in the implementation of the National eVidhan Application (NeVA), digitalization programmes, and initiatives for inclusive governance.
