Nagaland governor La. Gansesan asks the Lothas to uphold rich legacy of their forefathers

KOHIMA, Jun 15: Nagaland Governor, La. Ganesan the Wokha district had been aptly called the “Land of Plenty.” He said the people in the district should live up to it and become the food bowl of the State.

Addressing a meeting with the Heads of Offices in the district and Civil Societies Organisation at the Deputy Commissioner’s Official residence, Wokha on 15 June 2023, he said it was his earnest wish and desire to see Wokha as a developed district one day and contribute immensely to the State as well as the Nation. He urged them to uphold the rich legacy left by their forefathers and they have to let peace prevail to allow development to flourish in their land.

It was also his endeavour that every district in Nagaland has the four basic infrastructures namely education, adequate health care, good roads, and adequate banking facilities, he said. Stating that elementary education was a constitutional right and through flagship programs like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rastriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Project Nectar (funded by the World Bank), the Government had provided better school infrastructure and appointed teachers and posted them to schools with insufficient teachers. Programs and initiatives of the Government like providing free textbooks, mid-day meals, and free elementary education have re-defined the role of the state in the educational system. “However, they still have a long way to go to reach the benchmark of quality education for all our citizens,” he added.

While speaking on health care service in the district, he said it was an important focus area and quality healthcare should be the ultimate goal. The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), started in the year 2008 by the Government of India to improve the health care delivery system in rural areas, had boosted the health sector in a big way, the Governor said.

Today, so many government health-related schemes including Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, and the state’s own CM Health Insurance Scheme are in operation. He urged the concerned departments to take these government schemes to the doorsteps of the citizens so that the “common citizens are benefited.”

The Governor also impressed upon everyone the need to be good model citizens for the state as well as for the country. “As good citizens, we have to be law abiding and also co-operate and work hand in hand with government- both at the centre and in the state. We have to reaffirm our commitment to the democratic values and ideals enshrined in our constitution. We have to work harder in our march toward a united, strong, and prosperous nation,” Governor stated.

During the meeting, the Wokha Civil Societies Organisation headed by the Lotha Hoho and comprising 11 (eleven) other organisations submitted a memorandum on behalf of the Lotha community. It requested the Governor to either hand over the Wokha-Bokajan road to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) or to sanction taking up the road construction project. The Governor assured to take up the matter with the concerned Ministry on priority to ensure that it is implemented.

Department of Health & Family Welfare, PHED, Lead Bank District Manager, Forest, Environment and Climate Change, NEEPCO, PWD (R&B) presented their departmental activities undertaken in the district to the Governor. Later Security coordination meeting was also held with the District Administration and Police.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan (IAS).
