KOHIMA, May 18 (NEPS): Members of the Kohima Press Club (KPC) conducted a mass social service—a clean-up event—at the Press Club’s newly allotted plot adjacent to the Made in Nagaland complex on May 18, 2024.
Altogether, 24 members of the club participated.
It may be mentioned that following the approval of the allotment of the plot to the KPC by the State Land Acquisition Authority (SLAA), Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced during his 2024–25 budget press conference on February 27 that the state government would construct a Press Club building at the allotted site within a year.
The KPC’s old office at the Old Secretariat was burned down in a mob arson during the 2017 ULB protests. The Press Club has since been functioning without a permanent office space.
Appreciating all the members for their presence and contribution in clearing up the site, KPC President Alice Yhoshu said the Chief Minister’s assurance to construct a permanent Press Club building was a reflection that the “government of the day acknowledges the pivotal and indispensable role of the Fourth Estate in a democracy.”
“We look forward to the commitment of the state government in making the new Press Club building a vibrant media centre in the state capital with facilities to even cater to visiting journalists from other districts and states,” she reiterated.
The KPC was established in 2001. This is the state’s oldest press club. Its Silver Jubilee will be celebrated in 2026, ideally at its own office.
