ADVISORY FOR MON GENERAL PUBLIC DURING MONSOON

KOHIMA, Jul 18 (NEPS): Ajit Kumar Verma, the Deputy Commissioner for Mon, issued a warning to the general people of the Mon District on July 18, 2023, in advance of expected severe rains. Due to significant precipitation in the hill sector, the area is likely to face water logging, flash floods, landslides, and rising water levels in rivers and streams.

He cautioned the public against gathering along riverbanks for picnics, fishing, or other water-related activities, as well as against seeking cover under big trees, as a preventative measure.

On hilly roads, he asked drivers to exercise caution and immediately report any surface or slope cracks to the appropriate authorities.

People are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas that could experience landslides or debris flows when there has been a lot of rain or it has been consistently damp. People should also be alert for any strange noises that can indicate moving boulders, cracking trees, or moving debris. A change from clean to muddy water and unexpected increases in stream volume should also be carefully watched for.

The concerned Area Administrative Officers, Heads of Offices, Village Disaster Management Authorities (VDMAs), Village Council Chairmen, Head GBs, GBs, and Ward Authorities were further instructed by the Deputy Commissioner to take preventative measures and be ready to handle any emergencies brought on by natural calamities during the monsoon season. It was also stressed that VDMAs, Village Councils, Head GBs, and Ward authorities should watch riverbanks and report any events. (IA Mon)
