Protests against CAB to intensify, MPACAB calls 24-hour general strike

IMPHAL, Jan 28 (IFP): A conglomerate of 64 CSOs have come together today under the name ‘Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill’ (MPACAB), and has declared to impose a state wide 24-hour general strike from the midnight of January 30 to oppose the passing of CAB, 2016. The committee was formed today at Sangai Hall of Imphal Hotel during an emergency leaders’ meet of 64 civil society organisations from both the hills and the valley. The eminent organisations of them includes All Manipur United Club Organisation (AMUCO), United Committee Manipur (UCM), Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), Zeliangrong Union (Assam Manipur Nagaland), Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) among others. Apex bodies of tribal organisations were also present in the meeting namely Kuki Inpi Manipur, Zeliangrong Union Manipur Assam and Nagaland, United Vaiphei Social Forum Council, Kabui Mother’s Association, Kuki Women Union Manipur, Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation, All Manipur Muslim Development Committee, Kom Union, Komrem Youth Organisation Manipur, Indigenous Minority Organisation Manipur, All Tribal Students Union Manipur, Komrem Union Manipur and so on. Addressing media persons regarding the MPACAB line of agitation, member of MPACAB and advisor of Kuki Inpi Manipur, Tongmang Haokip (retired IRS) informed that the meeting resolved to have an emergency public meeting on January 29 at IMA Keithel at 1pm to oppose the CAB 2016 and to press the government of India to withdraw the bill at any cost. He further informed that another public meeting in the hill districts will be organised on January 30 and as a mark of a warning bell to both the state government and the centre and all the members of Rajya Sabha, MPACAB2019 declared 24-hour general strike from midnight of January 30 in the entire state of Manipur, he added.
