175 including team managers, coaches representing Nagaland in First North East Olympic Games inaugurated Imphal

KOHIMA, Oct 24: The first North East Olympic Games was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh at the main stadium Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal on Wednesday which will conclude on 28 October 2018.

Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister said North East of India had a distinct identity with similar culture and features. The region has borders with other countries which are full of human, natural potentials and capacities which are yet to be explored. He said in the past the socio-economic and geographical realities and challenges had subdued the speed of progress and development and added that it had been a long cherished dream of the region to create a platform to bring peace and friendship through sports.

He further maintained the region had talents and huge potentials in sports and also in other aspects and fields. Numerous sports person from Manipur and other North East had done and their country was proud of various achievements in the regional, national and international levels, he added.

The Chief Minister informed that a joint meeting of the North East Olympic Association was held on July 24, 2017 and decided to organize a North East Sports Meet as the first step under the name of North-East Olympic Games. He urged all the sportspersons to understand that the games play an important role in maintaining a healthy body and mind. He called upon them to play a fair game to foster the spirit of friendship and co-operation among the players.  He said sportsman must sacrifice his personal interest for the good of the team and take the game seriously and “should take focus on whatever game he/she plays to win.”

Singh declared the game open which was followed by oath taking ceremony, teams march past, band display and cultural programs.

Nagaland is being represented by 175 players including team managers and coaches. Altogether the North East Olympic Games features 12 different disciplines including archery, athletes, badminton, football, judo, shooting, table tennis, weight lifting, taekwondo, karate, boxing and wushu.
