KOHIMA, Jul 6: The Joint Forest Management Committee of Kidima village constructed a community forest nursery under the FDA programme wherein saplings of locally available tree species are grown. Some of the saplings were planted during the current year at the project side in Jhum areas.
The committee on Monitoring & Evaluation under the chairmanship of Senthil Kumar, IFS and ex-officio member Dr. Kenei, IFS visited the project sites in the presence of DFO Kohima, Rongsenlemla Imchen, IFS and the local functionaries on 5 July.
The committee members appreciated the efforts of the JFMC and the village council for their efforts in raising the nursery and plantation. Both the officers gave technical advice to the JFMC with regard to sustainable maintenance of nurseries and the plantation. DFO Kohima said that altogether 15 JFMCs have raised nurseries in their respective areas in Kohima, Chiephobozou and Tseminyu Ranges under Kohima Division during the current year and plantations were done in the project site sourcing the saplings from the JFMC Nurseries. She also said that the main objective to raise community nurseries is to instill a sense of responsibility to the community towards environmental awareness and to decrease the pressure on seedlings demand. During the tour, the committee members visited the community nursery, current year plantation site and previous year maintenance site.
