GOVERNOR STRESSED FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT COURSES IN UNIVERSITY CURRICULUMN

KOHIMA, Jul 4 (NEPS): Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya said the basic foundation of a developed society was education and further stressed the importance of introducing Skill Development courses in the University curriculum.

Addressing an interactive session with Nagaland University Officials of Mereima Campus on Wednesday, the Governor said educational institutions as the backbone of the society.

He opined that it was important to empower the young minds with knowledge, but however stated that they should not be self-centered but should give back to the society once they achieve their educational goals. Governor Acharya encouraged the Universities to inculcate their students with that thought. The ultimate goal of education should be to strengthen and develop the society, he added.

Harping on the importance of introducing Skill Development courses in the University curriculum, the Governor said jobs in the Government sector has reached a saturation point and the youth that come out of Universities should be entrepreneurs.   “Let us make our academics empower the students and make them employable” he stated.

He pointed out that University Grants Commission (UGC)’s scheme titled “Introduction of Career Oriented Courses in Universities and Colleges” aims at introducing career and market oriented, skill enhancing add-on courses at undergraduate level which will prove beneficial for jobs, self-employment and empowerment of the students.


He also said that in order for the State to progress we have to strengthen the society and called on the gathered to play their role towards the development of the State. He mentioned that there were various Central and State Government schemes and welfare programmes. He however felt that the welfare programmes were not reaching the targeted group. He urged the University and the student community to visit villages at regular intervals and to identify the beneficiaries for Central and State Flagship Programmes

Governor Acharya informed the meeting that the President of India has urged the Governors to convene meetings with VC of State Universities from time to time and to inspire Universities towards University Social Responsibility (USR).


The Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof Pradeshi Lal delivered the welcome address with Pro VC, NU Prof RC Gupta proposed the vote of thanks.
