IMPHAL | Apr 6 (IFP) : Manipur government has announced a cash reward of Rs. 15 lakhs each to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu who have won gold medals in Weightlifting event at the 21st Commonwealth Games being held at Gold Coast in Australia.
Sanjita Chanu won the second Gold Medal for India in the 53 kg category of women’s weightlifting event today.
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Sanjita Chanu won a gold medal each for India in the 48 kg and 53 kg category respectively in the women’s weightlifting event. Kh.Sanjita Chanu clinched the gold medal in the 53kg category beating twenty-two others in the competition while Mirabai Chanu beat ten competitors yesterday.
Chief minister, N. Biren Singh while congratulating the champion lifters said, “You have not only brought pride to state but also to the whole nation. Your hardwork and dedication will serve as an inspiration to the many budding sportsperson of the country. We are very proud of you.”
The state government cash incentive came as per existing rule that cash prizes of Rs. 15 lakhs, Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 8 lakh would be awarded to players from the state who bagged gold, silver and bronze medals in Commonwealth Games.
Youth affairs and sports minister, Letpao Haokip and works minister, Th.Biswajit Singh also heaped theirs praise for the stunning feat of the weightlifters.
Mentioned may be made that Sanjita Chanu had claimed a gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow. The twenty four year old weightlifter has been playing the sport of weightlifting since 2006. In the national circuit, she had won gold medal at the Senior National Championship in 2009 before grabbing a bronze medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2011.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had won India’s first gold medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2018 breaking her own as well Commonwealth Games records in the 48kg category. She has been representing India in different international events since 2014 in the 48 kg category. She has won gold medal in World Championships at USA in 2017 and a silver medal in Commonwealth Games 2014.
For her feat, Mirabai Chanu was awarded the Padmashree title by the Central government for her contributions to sports in 2018.
Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) has showered huge praise to both the weightlifters for theirs courageous effort.
MOA said Sanjita Chanu has created a new Commonwealth Games record lifting 84kg in snatch and 108 in clean and jerk with a total of 192kg.
MOA has also special praise for Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. The Manipur Weightlifting Association also lauded the performances of the weightlifters.
