NSLSA members attended Regional Meet of State Legal Services Authorities at Shillong  

KOHIMA, Sept 27 (NEPS): Regional Meet of State Legal Services Authorities for the North Eastern Region was held at State Convention Center, Shillong, on Wednesday. The event was first of its kind in the region hosted by Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority (NLSA), where all the District Secretaries and Chairmen from all the corners of the North Eastern States participated in the Program.

Representing Nagaland State, Seventeen Judges comprising of District Secretaries and Chairpersons attended the Regional Meet. Justice L.S Jamir, Judge Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench as Executive Chairman of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), accompanied the team.

Delivering the inaugural address, Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the Secretaries and Chairpersons working at the district level in Justice Service were the ones who dealt at the grass root level and they were the ones who executed the actual implementation of various Legal Services Schemes for the weaker sections by making direct one-to-one contact with many unseen faces.

Urging the need for the Legal Services Institution to reach out to even more people who were living below the poverty line (BPL), he further highlighted the statistics on International Poverty Line and people of India living below the poverty Line.

Justice Gogoi said access to justice did not necessarily mean being able to access to Courts. He therefore, underscored the need to seriously debate and review in this context and think to go beyond the Legal Services Schemes, while raising the question of expanding and doing something more in the context of Legal Services as defined in the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987.

The Executive Chairman further said the purpose of the Regional Meet was to discuss face to face with the District Secretaries and Chairpersons to understand the ground realities and the progress of the Legal Services in order to achieve greater success in delivering Legal Service. Earlier, he also inaugurated the regional meet.


The Regional Meet commenced with the Inaugural Session and followed by two Technical Sessions.  In the inaugural Session, Welcome Address was presented by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen, Judge, High Court of Meghalaya & Executive Chairman, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority and keynote Address by Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya & Patron-in-Chief, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority.

Alok Agarwal, Member Secretary of the National Legal Services Authorities pronounced the Vote of thanks.


Meanwhile, Nino Iralu, Member Secretary of NSLSA, on behalf of all the members of NSLSA, thanked Meghalaya State Legal Services Authorities, Meghalaya High Court, Protocol Officers, PSO, Government Officials and the Legal Fraternity of Meghalaya State for all the care, stay arrangements, hospitality and services extended to the Nagaland legal team.
