MOKOKCHUNG, June 5: World Environment Day, the biggest annual event of renewing and pledging to create cleaner and greener environment with special focus on importance of tree planting and clean campaigns was observed at Mokokchung town hall on 5th June 2017. The Observance of the Day witnessed record attendance of legislators from Mokokchung district, high officials from Forest and various departments, officials in Mokokchung district, village council members from all the villages and leaders from various NGOs in the district. With the rest of the world the Day was observed with the theme “Connecting People to Nature”
Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker, Dr Imtiwapang Aier who was the chief guest called upon the participants to seriously think about positive environmental action and restrain from random destruction of our environment. He said environmental issues are increasing due to ‘our greediness’. Expressing grave concern over rapid deforestation, Dr Imtiwapang said time has come to understand ways in which natural system support us. He said our fragile forest should be protected through concerted efforts before it is too late. The Speaker appealed to participants to make tree planting a habit saying that our well-being lies with protecting forest cover.
The Speaker appealed to the participants to make Mokokchung district a ‘carbon free zone’ through preservation of our natural forest.
Dr Benjongliba, Parliamentary Secretary, CAWD & Taxes, Guest Speaker at the function expressed concern over age old practice of slashed and burn jhuming saying that it has resulted in destroying our rich bio-diversity but, he said, this practice has been gradually shifting to permanent cultivation.

The function was chaired by Lhoubeilatou Kire, IFS principal Secretary, Environment, Forest, and Climate change while vote of thanks was proposed by I. Panger, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest.
In the second session, Imkonglemba IAS, Prof Sangyu Yaden and Prof. Lanunungsang Imchen delivered their speeches on topic, Role of Village Council in Conservation, Impact of Climate change and Wild Life Conservation respectively.
