NPF Legislator, Khriehu Liezietsu, resigns from Assembly Membership, paving way for Dr. Shurhozelie

KOHIMA, May 24 (NEPS): Ruling NPF Legislator from 10 Nothern Angami – I Assembly Constituency, Khriehu Liezietsu, has tendered his resignation from the Membership of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), and the Speaker of the NLA has accepted his resignation with effect from 24 May 2017.

It may be mentioned that he is the son of present Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Shurhozelie.

Dr. Shurhozelie, who is not a Member of the 12th NLA, has become Chief Minister of Nagaland on 22 February 2017 replacing TR Zeliang. And according to Article 164 (4) of the Constitution of India, a Minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the Legislature of the State shall at the expiration of that period cease to be a Minister. As such, he before the expiration of that period needs to become a Member of the Assembly, and for that, any sitting Member of the Assembly has to vacate his/her Seat to facilitate his contest from there to become a Member of the Assembly to enable him continuing his Ministerial business.
