ZUNHEBOTO, Mar 17: A one day Mithun Mela cum Regional Livestock show organized by ICAR- NRC on Mithun and Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) was held on 16th March 2017 at Saptiqa town, Zunheboto. Parliamentary Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, S. Chuba Longkumer and Parliamentary Secretary, Law and Justice, SIRD, Er. Picto Shohe graced the occasion as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion, Chuba Longkumer said the Mithun, since time immemorial, has been a part of all Naga social events and ceremonies. Lamenting the inability of the Nagas to harness and realize the benefits of Mithun rearing, the Chief Guest said that his department has been exploring the potentiality of the Mithun, and in collaboration with ICAR-NRC has been undertaking research to develop and preserve the animal through scientific and better breeding management.
Longkumer urged upon the people of the area to positively contribute to the venture, adding that the project cannot succeed without the community’s participation. He said that the Governor of Nagaland has also supported the program and has announced awards in various categories for Mithun farmers, for which his department is assisting the people in rearing 130 mithuns though out the state. The chief guest also stated that Rotomi village has been selected for establishing Gokul Gram for breeding Mithun under National Programme on Bovine Breeding, with an aim to increase awareness regarding scientific methods to rear mithun for farmers and also exchange views and update technical skills.
Guest of honour, Parliamentary Secretary, Er. Picto Shohe in his speech said Saptiqa area is suitable for rearing mithun from geographical and topographical perspective. He encouraged the people of the area to give their best cooperation to the department and make use of the project as it will generate more income and wealth for farmers. Er. Picto also urged the department not to neglect the project but to sincerely assist the implementation of the program in the future.
The program was chaired by Commissioner and Secretary, MK Mero, welcome address was delivered by Director, ICAR-NRC, Medziphema, Dr. Abjijit Mitra. Director, AH&VS, Dr. I.P Khala also spoke on the occasion.Vote of thanks was pronouced by Asst. Technical Officer, NRCM, Dr. Kezhavituo Vupru.
