KOHIMA, Jan 27 (NEPS): The Nagaland Cabinet has decided to go ahead with the conduct of polls to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland slated for February 1, 2017.

In a marathon Cabinet meeting today, the Cabinet discussed at length the appeals made by various organizations for deferment of Municipal Elections. They, however, decided to go ahead with the conduct of polls to the ULBs as “elections to Municipal and Town Councils cannot be deferred and shall be taken to the logical conclusion as per provisions of law.”

The Cabinet also said that “adequate arrangements may be taken by administration and police for smooth conduct of elections.” It, however, said that the State Government was ready for “dialogue” with Tribal Hohos and other organizations to “explain the position of the Government.”

Meanwhile, as the State Cabinet has decided not to defer or postpone the elections to ULBs and to go ahead with the conduct of polls to the ULBs, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has issued directive to their all party rank and file at all levels to strictly “observe party discipline and ensure that elections” to the ULBs are held successfully.
