Fratricidal killing among SoO groups claims two militant leaders

HNA founder and UKLF leader killed

IMPHAL, July 5 (IFP): In what appeared to be fratricidal killing between rival militant groups, two Kuki militant leaders belonging to different groups currently under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Government were killed in separate incidents.

According to reports, the founding president of Hmar National Army (HNA), a signatory group under SoO with the government under KNO (HNA/KNO) and vice president of the umbrella organisation the KNO, Lalthangsang Intoate, 54, son of late Khamlien was shot and knifed in the wee hours today around 1 am.

The militant leader was reportedly attacked while he was at the corridor of his house located at Hmar Veng, Lamka, after coming back from a meeting.

He was later rushed to the Churachandpur district hospital, however, he was declared brought dead at the district hospital around 4 am.


His body was handed over to family members after post mortem examination at the Churachandpur district hospital.

The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained till the time of filing this report as no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

The slain militant leader was survived by his wife and two children.

Meanwhile, a senior member of United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), another signatory group of SoO with the Central and state government was killed by suspected rival group belonging to the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) at Moreh in Chandel District.

The identity of the deceased militant leader has been identified as self styled captain, Jamkholal Zou alias George, 39, son of (Late) Yamkhothang Zou of Kholim Village near Sugnu.

According to reliable sources, Jamkholal reportedly went to the border town unarmed when he was abducted by armed persons allegedly belonging to KNO and thrown into the river after brutally murdering him in cold blood last Saturday.

The incident came to light on Monday after the family members of Jamkholal Zou lost contact with him and enquired about his whereabouts, said the source.

In connection with the incident, large numbers of Moreh denizens gathered and held a Public Meeting at the office of the Hill Tribal Council (HTC) on Monday.

Afterwards, a search operation was conducted along the said river under the supervision of HTC, Kuki Women Union and Kuki Student’s Organisation (KSO) Moreh.

However, the body as alleged could not be found till date even after conducting massive search operation for the second consecutive day, added the source.

It is learnt (L) Yamthang Zou, father of Jamkholal was also shot dead along with a colleague by Kuki National Army (KNA) way back in 2006. And the Saturday incident of murder was happened after reconciliation between UKLF and KNO last October.

With the two latest victims, altogether four militant leaders (including a civilian) under Suspension of Operation with the government have fallen victim of factional fight within the span of 15 days.

On June 20, the former joint secretary of UKLF was shot at by armed miscreants last night at his Molnom residence, Churachandpur district. However, he survived the attack.


The following day, the surrendered chairman of PREPAK VC group and his driver, was shot death by rival groups inside the 7th MR battalion Khabeisoi.

Both the PREPAK VC group and the persons arrested by police in connection with the killing were members of another group under SoO agreement with the Government.
