“Unless our rural people get economy, we will never grow:” Kikheto

KOHIMA, May 11 (NEPS): Y Kikheto Sema, IAS, the new Secretary of the Land Resources Department, said they should always focus on the development of the rural economy. “Unless and until our rural people get the economy, we will never grow,” he said while interacting with the Director and his staffs and other District Officers of the Land Resources Department here at its Conference Hall on Wednesday.

After taking over as the Secretary of the Land Resources Department, Sema had the first interaction with officials of the Department. During the interaction, Y Benthungo Murry, GIS Expert, Rongdenyala Pongen, Assistant Technical Expert (SLNA), Hekato N, District Project Officer, Dimapur and Tepunol Yoredpo, Wokha of the Department had made Power Point Presentations to him of various projects of the Department and also their achievements over the years while Mathung Yanthan, Director, gave a Power Point Presentation for the overall background of the Department.

The Secretary disclosed that the State had one of the highest ratios of Government employees in the country. “We have 1.40 lakh government employees in the State whereas their department (Land Resources) has just 0.14% of the total employees,” he said. “But I am extremely happy that these employees have done commendable works which benefited the citizens of the State.” They needed quality works, not quantity, he stressed. He was impressed by the quality of works and outcome produced by the dedicated and most qualified officers of the department and expressed his profound happiness that most of the works initiated by the department were rural-based. “I am so happy with the way you are doing,” he said. “I am rather motivated.”


“I have been in the Finance Department for 10 years before being posted to the Land Resources Department,” he said.

“Thank God that I am posted in right department that I will be able to connect with the rural people,” he said. “Unless and until our rural people get economy, we will never grow.”

He said he would spend most of his time by visiting various districts to see how the works and projects had been going on. “I will be your watchdog,” he told the Officers and Staffs of the department. He said he and other Officers and fields staffs should visit district headquarters and see the projects by inviting even the VDBs so as to send a message to the people across the State that they were there for their welfare and development. He said Departmental review Meetings should also be held in other district headquarters on rotational basis once in two months. “We have an army of professionals and your success stories should be narrated and shown to the people,” he added.


Sema said he always wanted to work with the officers and staffs as a team. “Success depends on the team work,” he explained and assured them that he would do his best to adjust with all the officers and staffs of the department.
