Couple shot dead

KOHIMA, Feb 7 (EPN/NEPS): A couple was shot dead last night at about 6 PM at a place between Wapher and Sekiur, National Highway 202, some 45 kilometers away from Kiphire. They have been identified as Mr. Alemba Sangtam from Yangzitong Village and his wife Naro from Shamator Village. They were shot dead by unidentified miscreants at about 6 PM last night (February 6) while returning from Shamator. Their dead bodies were recovered by police early this morning.

Meanwhile, State Home Minister Y Patton has strongly condemned the incident, terming as "unfortunate" the killing of innocent villagers including a woman. "It should be condemned by one and all," he said in a statement issued today.

"The State Police have been directed to nab the culprits responsible for the crimes and it is the strong commitment of the state Government that, under any circumstances, it will leave no stone unturned to see that peace and tranquility are not disturbed in the region," the Home Minister said.

He categorically stated that "violence can never be the means to bring peace and solution." "By committing such heinous crimes at a time when the entire Naga people are yearning for peace and unity is not sending a good message to the others," he added.
