KOHIMA, Sept 1: A protest rally against rape culture “Make our society safe for women” was organised by the Kohima Village Council at Kohima on 1st September 2015.
The rally was staged in connection with the recent alleged rape case of 60 years old women on 22 August 2015.Various organisations from different Communities and tribes turn out to show their solidarity against the evil in the land. The procession led by the Kohima Village Council with a slogan “Rapist, We Curse You” started off from all quarters of Kohima town and proceeded to the Chief Minister’s Official residence and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Nagaland T.R. Zeliang through Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor IAS in the presence of Minister for Forest and Environment and Ecology Dr. Neikesalie Kire; Parliamentary Secretary for Sports and Youth Resource, Khriehu Liezietsu; SP Kohima. They also submitted a separate Memorandum to the District and Session Judge, Kohima at DC’s Office, Kohima.
The memorandum submitted by the Kohima Village Council stated that the crime committed person is treated as most serious and should not be bailed out. It further stated that the Government should ensure safety to all the citizens of Kohima by deploying the Police machinery to its fullest potentials and efficiency, such as Installation of CCTV’s in all strategic locations in Kohima town and also for establishment of forensic laboratory in Nagaland.
After submitting the Memorandum to the Chief Minister, they assembled at Khuochiezie, Kohima where a programme was held. The Adviser Kohima Village Council Pheluopfhelie Kesiezie who chaired the programme said that the rally was organised not only to show anger and sorrow but to stand in solidarity so that such evil may never happen again in the land.
The vice Chairman T. Khel, Kohima Village, Neibu Sekhose narrated the Incident occurred on August 22nd and thanked all the organisations from various communities for sharing their grief and sorrow at this juncture. Former President of Angami Gazetted Officers, Vipralhou Kesiezie also spoke where he stated that the crime committed was beyond description and conveyed a message to the Naga Society in general and citizens in particular that the Kohima Village has no room for rapist who indulge in any anti-social activities. APO President, Dr. Vilhousa Seleyi, President of Rengma Hoho and President of Kewhimiapfü Mechü Krotho (KMK), Khriengü also spoke during the programme.
The Kohima Village Council Chairman, Neivor Rutsa in his speech asserted that the prime objective of Kohima Village Council is “Peace and Security” however such incident is beyond description and explanations as such the Kohima Village Council will not tolerate of any such crime. He further thanked all the various Organisations from different fields/tribes for showing their sorrow and solidarity against such evil in the land.
More than 12 thousand people from various organisations participated in the protest rally carrying banners with slogans like, “The Government is of the people, by the people, for the people”, “Rapist – we curse you”, Know your society, know your culture, respect yourself”, “Peace & security prime objective”, “Install CCTV’s in all strategic points/area”, “Zero tolerance for rapist” and “Rapist no better than beast”. During the rally, Administrators, Policemen, IRB, Medical team and Fire services were deployed to thwart any untoward incident.
In this connection, the Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor IAS expressed his appreciations to the Kohima Village Council for maintaining strict discipline, law and order, and also for maintain high sense of cleanliness by avoiding use of play-cards and also for cleaning the waste in the form of water bottle during the rally. He also assured that the District Administration would take up with the various agencies in this case connection to deliver justice.
