Gadkari held review meeting with NE CMs, PWD Ministers

KOHIMA, May 2 (NEPS): Union Minister for Road Transport, Highway and Shipping Nitin Gadkari held a review meeting with all Chief Ministers and PWD Ministers of North East at Guwahati on Saturday.

They had discussion on various roads and highway projects of the region. The Union Minister said the central government would encourage the local contractors in the region to take up civil works for road projects with the aim of providing employment to the local population.

He said the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), mandated to develop roads in the country with special focus on the Northeast, would organise a two-day workshop for youths of the Northeast to take up these contracts. The ministry will also award contracts to local contractors for carrying out projects worth around Rs 20 crore.

The NHIDCL would give preference to local contractors for construction of the roads. The corporation will provide 10 per cent machinery and 10 per cent resource mobilisation to the local contractors in advance to commence work on the highways. This would encourage the local youths to take up to construction works which will ultimately lead to employment generation, he mentioned.

He also asked the north-eastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh — to acquire land and obtain the necessary regulatory clearances after which the Ministry of Road Transport and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will build those roads.

Nagaland Minister for National Highways Nuklutoshi attended the Review Meeting which was also attended Chief Secretaries and Chief Engineers of the region.
